Passing the Torch: Caleb's Legacy of Faith

Joshua 15:14-19 · Judges 1:1-15 · Judges 3:7-9

In Joshua 15 and Judges 1, Caleb's challenge involving his daughter and a city led to Othniel stepping up, foreshadowing his role as Israel's first judge and highlighting how faith and leadership are passed down through generations.

In Joshua chapter 15, we find a truly important incident involving Caleb and his daughter. We know it's significant because the record appears in both Joshua 15:14-19 and again in Judges 1:1-15. This event perfectly sets the stage for the book of Judges!

First, Caleb, by faith in God, drives out the three sons of Anak from Hebron Joshua 15:14. Now, it's worth noting that the sons of Anak were giants, so this was no small feat! After that, he moves on to Debir, formerly known as Kiriath Sepher Joshua 15:15. In an intriguing move, Caleb makes an offer:

"Whoever attacks Kiriath Sepher and takes it, to him I will give Achsah my daughter as wife." Joshua 15:16

It’s quite a test, isn't it? Caleb is looking for someone truly courageous and Godly. And who steps up to the challenge? Joshua 15:17 Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. He takes the city, and true to his word, Caleb gives him Achsah as his wife.

But the story doesn't end there! Achsah, it seems, has more in mind for her inheritance. Once married, she persuades Othniel to ask her father for a field. When she dismounts from her donkey, Caleb asks her, "What do you wish?" Her response is wonderful Joshua 15:18-19:

"Give me a blessing; since you have given me land in the Negeb, give me also springs of water." So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

This whole incident serves as the introduction to the detailed account of the land allotted to Judah, stretching from Joshua 15:20 to Joshua 15:63. This underscores its importance in the record. But why?

Leading the Way in Judges

Now, let's fast forward to the beginning of the book of Judges. It opens with this very same incident! Judges 1:1 After Joshua's death, the people ask the Lord who should go up first against the Canaanites. Unsurprisingly, it's Judah. As we read on, it becomes clear that Caleb is leading the tribe of Judah in claiming their inheritance. Judah is presented as a tribe that successfully takes what God has promised.

This connects back to Caleb’s earlier courage. Remember when he and the other spies went into the land? They saw “Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there” in Hebron Numbers 13:21-22. This was the very place that caused so much fear among the Israelites, preventing them from entering the Promised Land. But now, it's the place Caleb goes in and attacks Joshua 15:14, Judges 1:10.

A New Generation of Faithful Leaders

What we are seeing here is Caleb, even in his eighties, taking the lead in fulfilling Abraham's promises to possess the land. He's acting in faith, and it makes me wonder about the deeper significance of the incident with his daughter and son-in-law.

Could Caleb, an aging leader, be looking for someone to pick up the baton? By setting this challenge to the younger generation, he was searching for someone who would step up and follow in his footsteps – someone with faith and courage. Othniel, the son of Kenaz, was that man. He not only gained Caleb's daughter as his wife but also a city and, with Achsah's wisdom, a vital water supply.

But what happened to Othniel after this? The book of Judges, as its name suggests, is filled with the stories of the judges God raised up to deliver Israel. And who is the very first judge chosen for this crucial task? Let's take a look at Judges 3:7-9:

The children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals… So the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

Just as we might have suspected! Caleb, through his challenging test, was indeed looking to the next generation – the next generation of those who would judge righteously, with faith and courage. He was actively seeking out and training the leaders who would carry on God's work.
